The Sullivan Family and El Porvenir were thrilled when so many of you enthusiastically responded to this matching challenge last year. The $15,000 challenge exceeded our wildest dreams. We cannot thank you enough for your generosity. You made so many water, sanitation, reforestation, and health education hopes become reality for the rural Nicaraguans with whom we partner.
Because of this great success, El Porvenir is teaming up again with the Sullivan Family to double the impact of the first $15,000 in gifts made August 15-September 30.
The Sullivan Family offers this challenge because of their belief in our program. They have seen firsthand the results of their investment. Water and sanitation development has a domino effect. With clean water and safe sanitation comes health. When people are healthy, they are able to achieve an education. With education comes economic opportunities. It all starts with water and sanitation:
*Mariano from the community of Achote: “We drank from the creek even though we knew it wasn’t right. We didn’t have enough money for our own needs. We felt badly that our children were sick so often. Now we have a clean, sanitary well and have learned so much from health education workshops. Our children will have more opportunities. We take care of this well as if were an eye on each of our faces.”
*Ester from the community of El Cristal finished 4th grade before her mother told her she had to stay home to help with the house and younger siblings. When her mother did not have enough food for the whole family, she only fed the youngest children. Ester was the second oldest and had to go without. Her father worked hard but did not earn enough to take care of the 11 children. Ester has only 3 children because she does not want them to ever go hungry, like she did. She does not want her children to suffer, though they did without clean water and a latrine. Since building the well and latrine in 2011, Ester and her children have not had to go to the doctor and her children are able to attend school.
Our goal for the future of Nicaragua is a vibrant country with healthy, educated citizens. This starts with clean water, improved sanitation, reforested watersheds, and with YOU!
